Yesterday, the Journal Times endorsed the idea of a one week tax holiday on energy saving merchandise. Among the reasons why the JT considered this a good idea was that Illinois customers would "drive north, buy a whole bunch of stuff, and not pay a penny in taxes."
Perhaps so, but they would be breaking the law. Illinois buyers of Wisconsin merchandise are required to pay sales tax to the State of Illinois on those purchases. This tax is almost never collected, unless you buy a car in Wisconsin, at which point the State of Illinois will require tax payment before registering the vehicle.

Well, since no one has yet commented on this topic... this is somewhat peripheral, as it does have to do with taxes.
Fox News Story
Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy.
I think I'll stop using the term "tax cuts". Instead, I'll start calling it "tax recession". Giving back some of the tax money that would have otherwise been introduced into the economy, in the first place.
Repubs and Dems agree on tax rebates? Is it an election year by chance?
What came to mind immediately was that in a future election the Republicans will say, "Hey, we gave tax cuts to the common man" and the Democrats will say, "Hey, the Republicans gave tax cuts to the corporations and reduced the amount of money available to starving welfare children".
Caledon, are you suggesting that our current crop of statesmen might someday deliberately mischaracterize their benevolent actions towards mankind, for political gain no less. What have I left to believe in?
Yourself.
Denis, you should always believe in something. I believe I'll have another drink.
