I am saddened but not suprised by the election of Barack Obama. We have chosen charisma over character. We voted for undefined change and we will get it. Some change can be good, some terrible. Soon we will find out what kind of change we will get.
On a positive note, Obama is probably the only politician capable of leading the kind of change I think we need to see in the education department. He could shine a light on the horrible performance of urban public school systems and he could shame Democrats into supporting school choice. This would allow large numbers of poor and black students to access education options outside the public school system. There is no reason to believe that he will, but I can hope, can't I?

And I hope that Drew Barrymore will be taking me Hollywood too.
But you never know.
Yes, the teachers' union will be calling the shots, not reason or goodwill.
Now get back to getting used to the fact that us working folks are just two-legged ATMs for the gubment (and criminals).
Sorry Denis, Barry is far more likely to kill school choice than expand it.
One positive note you may have overlooked is that the Bush tax cuts do not end until 2010. That should make the mid-terms much more fun than this last election.
You are correct Nemo, but I'm going with hope over reason from now on. If you can't beat em, join em.
Obama won 4 republican states. McCain won 0 democrat states. Obama beat McCain almost 2:1 in electoral votes, victory was swift and convincing. Tried & true republican counties turned blue in '08.
It's your turn to be sad as we'v been the past 8 years! Thank goodness the inbred from Alaska got sent home where she belongs.
McCain is a loser, more top republican figures
Supported Obama, other republican contestants wanted to
steer as far away from Bush as humanly possible.
Americans showed just how much they enjoy republican trickle down economics.
Obama won 9 republican states, not 4. McCain won 0 democrat states.
Obama may be the next president but I see a big swing to the right be nice for the GOP to control the House again.
I pray God that the GOP has the guts to deadlock EVERY major goal of Obama.
Too late Colt! Obama/Pelosi/Reid will move faster than a greased pig to jam in every possible (expensive) program, from gubment health care to other freebies. Once these programs are in place they will not be able to be taken apart, and as they fail the answer will be to give them more money. The power base of freebie-expecters is now in place and immovable, so get used to it.
You can expect this nation to have a funny slow spin around the toilet bowl (funny to other countries) for maybe 15-20 years. By then all the committments to pensions for the teachers' union and city gubment emplyees will be in full swing. Places like Racine will not be able to pay these bills even if police, fire, road service are ELIMINATED. Who will they tax then?
hopefully Obama will stop these damn corporate welfare programs too!

"Americans showed just how much they enjoy republican trickle down economics."
I disagree. I think that Americans forgot just how much they enjoy Democratic tax and spend economics.
After Obama legalizes millions of illegal’s & perhaps is able to give D.C. electoral votes, it may be changed forever. His economic policies will be a disaster, causing the "don't expect me to educate myself on the issues" class to call for more of the Democrat prescription which has caused and will exasperate the problem. Energy costs will continue to rise more in this country than they do in others where a more sane approach is taken, causing our manufacturing to be more non-competitve and lowering our standard of living. The punishing of the successful will cause them to not invest here. These policies have been tried elsewhere and have always failed. The vibrant economic areas of the world (i.e.: East Asia)are thriving due to adopting free market policies while the stagnant areas (i.e.: Europe)are lagging due to abandoning them. Obama looks to follow enlightened Europe. For my children's sake, I can only HOPE that I am incorrect about the CHANGE that I see coming. With such a small track record, and Obama having said basically nothing of substance on the campaign, I can only hope that I am wrong.
In reply to "Hopefully Obama will stop these corporate welfare programs too". Excuse me, but have you heard of the auto industry bailout? Why prolong the failure of a business model that no longer works? Obama will do this to reward the unions. Do you think that Detroit's problems are due to the economic slow down? If so, you haven't paid attention for years. The Detroit auto makers have been bleeding cash for YEARS while other auto makers have thrived! To keep them going with their current problems will take billions every month for as long as the legacy costs of retired workers and out dated labor rules that apply only to the big three continue. GM has 6.2 retired workers receiving generous retirement and health care benefits for every current employee. Toyota has zero. The unions have saddled Detroit with out of date work place rules that do nothing but milk the company to benefit the union (such as job banks - keeping laid off employees on the payroll). This business model cannot compete today. The big 3 needs to declare bankruptcy as soon as possible so that they can reorganize and get out of these unfair union deals and be able to compete. Obama, Pelosi & Reed will give them money so that they can stay afloat and keep these union contracts alive because they need to obey their masters. We will pay for this (average Detroit auto worker $78,000 per year in compensation). Where's the change?
Another thing, Obama campaigned on ending the John McCain tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. I challange anyone to identify what these tax breaks are. I am a tax professional and there is no such thing.
